about

Written with west Texas in mind, deserts and roving rainstorms belie the hidden life of local residents who often find their distraction in alcohol and cars as they travel from town to distant town for work. The city of Marfa, specifically, is now home to many transplants, mostly eclipsing the racist tensions of a once booming silver mining town and Nazi POW camp that still ripple just beneath its surface.

The drums in the song, with their chopped almost sampled repetition, represent the slow moving life of residents conjuring the image of landscapes, drifting by, outside of the car window.

The guitar and voice of Singer Mayberry paint a disillusioned lullaby as the song drifts to sleep only to be woken in the midst of a wrecked car, the fuzzed-out chorus sounding like distant sirens from a first responder

lyrics

I'm seeing flat black cars
And I've got battle scars
Don't want to drive no more
Its all just way too far

Erasing memories
Of when you looked at me
Back when this town was free
And we had everything

I'll be your guard rail
You're guard rail
You're crooked guard rail

I'll be you're guard rail
You're guard rail
You're twisted guard rail

I'm seeing twisted bars
How did we slide this far?
Just came to gaze at stars
Now we don't kiss no more

I'll be you're guard rail
You're guard rail
You're crooked guard rail

I'll be you're guard rail
You're guard rail
You're twisted guard rail
